Dental Trauma & Tooth Avulsion Treatment in St Leonards

By: damian@nestdental.com.auUpdated: February 25, 2026

Dental trauma can happen suddenly - from sports injuries and falls to accidents and unexpected impacts. When a tooth is knocked loose, fractured, or completely knocked out (tooth avulsion), immediate action is critical. At Nest Dental in St Leonards, we provide urgent assessment and treatment for dental injuries.

What Is Dental Trauma?

Dental trauma refers to injury to the teeth, gums, lips, or jaw caused by external force. Trauma can range from minor enamel chips to severe injuries such as tooth displacement or complete avulsion (a tooth being knocked out). The faster treatment is provided, the better the outcome - particularly in cases of avulsed permanent teeth.

Types of Dental Trauma

Dental injuries vary in severity:

1

Chipped or Fractured Tooth

Minor fractures may affect only the enamel, while deeper fractures may involve dentin or the pulp.

2

Tooth Luxation (Loose or Displaced Tooth)

The tooth may be pushed inward, outward, or sideways. Stabilisation may be required.

3

Tooth Avulsion (Knocked-Out Tooth)

The tooth is completely displaced from its socket. Reimplantation is possible if treated within 30–60 minutes.

4

Root Fracture

A crack in the root of the tooth, which may require splinting or extraction depending on location.

What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out

Time is critical. Follow these steps immediately:

1

Find the tooth

Handle it by the crown (white part), not the root.

2

Rinse gently

If dirty, rinse briefly with milk or saline. Do not scrub or remove tissue fragments.

3

Reimplant if possible

Gently push the tooth back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place.

4

Keep it moist

If you can't reimplant, store the tooth in milk, saline, or inside your cheek.

5

See a dentist immediately

The best chance of saving the tooth is treatment within 30–60 minutes.

How We Treat Dental Trauma

Treatment depends on the type and severity of injury. Options include dental bonding for chips, splinting for loose teeth, root canal treatment for damaged pulp, crown placement for structural restoration, and reimplantation for avulsed teeth. We'll assess the injury thoroughly and discuss the best approach with you.
