Learn more about Root Canal TreatmentA periapical dental abscess is a painful infection at the tip of a tooth's root, most commonly caused by deep decay, trauma, or a cracked tooth. If you're experiencing severe toothache, swelling, sensitivity, or a bad taste in your mouth, prompt treatment is important to stop the infection from spreading.
A periapical abscess is an infection that develops at the end of a tooth root. Once infected, pressure builds at the root tip, causing pain and inflammation. Sometimes the abscess creates a draining channel (a 'gum boil'), which can reduce pain but does not remove the infection.
Common symptoms include:
Often worsens when lying down or biting.
May appear near the tooth or spread into the cheek or jaw.
Pain with hot or cold that lingers.
The tooth may feel 'high' or tender.
Especially if the abscess is draining.
Possible sign the infection is spreading.
Tender glands under the jaw or in the neck.
Our approach focuses on relieving pain, treating the infection, and preserving your tooth wherever possible.
We reduce pressure and discomfort, and may prescribe medication when clinically indicated.
Often the best tooth-saving option - removing infected pulp, disinfecting the canals, and sealing to prevent reinfection.
If the tooth is severely damaged, extraction may be recommended, followed by replacement options.
Abscesses can recur if underlying issues aren't addressed. We'll recommend follow-up care and preventive visits.
Home care can help manage symptoms temporarily, but it does not remove the source of infection.
